Biography

In June of 2007, the Illinois Supreme Court appointed Laura Bertucci Smith to the vacancy of Judge Figueroa in the 6th Judicial Subcircuit. Since her appointment, Judge Bertucci Smith has been working tirelessly on behalf of the People of Cook County. Prior to her appointment, Judge Bertucci Smith served as an Assistant Cook County State's Attorney for nearly 16 years where she handled all types of cases, from possession of narcotics to first degree murder. She worked in both the Appellate Division, where she argued cases before both the Illinois Supreme Court and the First District Appellate Court and the Felony Trial Division, where she conducted hundreds of bench trials and 30 jury trials. In 2004 State's Attorney Richard A. Devine choose her to Supervise the Domestic Violence Division.

As the supervisor, she headed a division of over 20 attorneys that prosecuted both felony and misdemeanor domestic violence cases. She helped develop two new units in the division, a felony review unit and a preliminary hearing unit. She headed the Cook County State's Attorney's Domestic Violence Task Force and was a member of many other Domestic Violence Councils and groups including the Illinois Family Violence Coordinating Council. Bertucci Smith has trained both police and prosecutors on the issues surrounding domestic violence and has been an active member of the community, speaking at community meetings, churches and schools about domestic violence awareness and prevention.

Judge Bertucci Smith is a graduate of the DePaul University-College of Law and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She lives in the Wicker Park neighborhood with her husband and their son.

 

It is my privilege to serve the People of Cook County as a Circuit Court Judge. In June of 2007, I was selected by the Illinois Supreme Court to fill the vacancy of Judge Raymond Figueroa in the 6th Judicial Subcircuit and I need your support in the upcoming primary on February 5th to continue to serve as a judge. I was admitted to the Illinois bar in 1991 and live with my husband and son in the Wicker Park neighborhood. My experience as both a trial and appellate lawyer, as well as my temperament, integrity and compassion make me an educated and impartial jurist. It is with your vote that I will have the opportunity to continue to serve you as a Judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County.
